November Language Learning

Focus: Jillian Jiggs/Study of the Brain/Skating/Peace/Woodland Animals

Writing Activities

  • Labeling of woodland animals mural

  • Journal three things they learned about the brain (parent scripted)

  • Pattern book – I see a _________ _______ing in the ________. (i.e..  I see a deer running in the woods, I see a fish swimming in the river)

  • With pictures of animal tracks made comparisons of my foot is bigger than, smaller than.

  • Added a factual piece of information about deer that they learned through our study to their craft up on a bulletin board. Used sentence strips for this writing, student printed with parent assistance for spelling.

Word Study

  • Worked with children one to one to identify their letter knowledge

  • Take home book messages – continuing to work on identifying letters for sounds that they hear

  • Letter d for deer, items brainstormed were printed onto a enlarged letter of a d. In journals drew a dog following the format used with animated literacy and labelled their picture

  • Word play with the Elkonin method for the word family “og”.


October Language Learning

Focus: Fall/Fire Safety/Thanksgiving/Halloween

Writing Activities

  •  Created a brainstorming web of areas we have safety rules for (biking, walking, bus, fire, winter sports)

  • made a class bulletin size bus and individual

  • students printed the bus rules on with the help of a parent for spelling and letters

  • Journal entry reflection for fieldtrip to Prairie Garden Farms

  • In response to pattern story book Leaves on Pumpkins children created their own books called Leaves on . . . (ghosts, witches, haunted houses, etc.) For illustrations we did torn paper pieces to put on the illustrations they had drawn

  • How to cook a turkey directions written (adult scripted) on the tail feathers of a collage picture the children created

  • For Homework children discussed and had parents write ideas for how the brain is like a cabbage, a raisin, a pillowcase, a grapefruit, an avocado, string cheese and a walnut

  • Discussion of the parts of our brain using the props identified above in the homework done with parents

Word Study

  • letter t, brainstormed words that begin with this letter onto an enlarged form followed by a printing page where they had to draw a turkey and label it.

  • Used the Elkonin method with the word pumpkin

  • Letter p, brainstormed words onto an enlarged letter p followed by printing of the letter p

  • Word witch discussion, how many letters in the word, what letter does the word begin with

  • Matching of picture cards for rhymes that go with the song A Haunting We Will Go

  • Take home messages encouraging students to identify the letters needed to spell the sounds in words for the messages
